NFL Picks Week 2: Predictions in Detail

Monday Night Football: Lions @ Packers – NFL Week 2 Predictions and Picks

Week 2 wraps up with an NFC North showdown between Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions. This will be the 182nd edition of one of the oldest NFL rivalries which, however, lost its relevance a long time ago. Packers own the past four games including 42-21 drubbing exactly a year ago to the day.

In two seasons with Matt La Fleur as a head coach GB is 26-7 in the regular season and 6-0 in the games following a loss. Packers were annihilated 38-3 by the Saints in Week 1 so Monday Night Football looks like an opportunity to show the whole country that it’s too early to write off the green and gold gang. So take this into consideration when making your NFL picks Week 2.

Packers placed LB Za’Darius Smith on the IR with a back injury hoping to get him back by the middle of October. TE Josiah Deguara and G Lucas Patrick are still in the concussion protocol and it’s unclear whether they’ll take the field on Monday Night Football.

Detroit made a heroic comeback against the 49ers ultimately losing 41-33. The Lions placed CB Jeff Okudah on IR with a torn Achilles while DE Kevin Strong and WR Tyrell Williams have not been cleared for practice after suffering concussions against SF.

QB Aaron Rodgers has 25 TDs vs. 3 INTs in 9 career home starts on Monday with a 118 rating. While his relationship with the team management is strained, to say the least, there’s no reason to doubt his commitment. Especially when he’s projected to surpass on Monday John Elway for 10th most pass yards in NFL history.

Anything else but a Packers win will be a shock. The line started at 10, climbed to 11.5 before falling back to 11. I never feel comfortable betting on a double-digit spread but this is not the only instance in the NFL Week 2 picks against the spread. After all the Lions were trailing by 24 with just three minutes to go home against the Niners. Playing on the road against an angry team they should be out of the contest long before its end.

Our Expert NFL Pick for This Game: Packers -11 (-109)

Sunday Night Football: Chiefs @ Ravens – NFL Week 2 Predictions and Picks

Ravens get no help with their schedule. Less than a week after the heartbreaking 27-33 OT loss in Las Vegas they welcome the two-time defending AFC champions Kansas City Chiefs. Head coach John Harbaugh is 15-2 in home primetime games but the injuries mount and he’s due for an awakening.

The already suspect O-Line took another hit with LT Ronnie Stanley being doubtful for Sunday night. The expectation is for Alejandro Villanueva to replace him with Patrick Makari getting the start at RT. Veteran RB Devonta Freeman will be promoted to the 53-man roster while WR Marquise Brown (6 catches for 69 yards and a TD against the Raiders) is questionable. In other words: the non-existent running game will be complemented by a not that strong looking receiving corps and QB Lamar Jackson will have to put the team on his back.

Chiefs have won the past four games against the Ravens while head coach Andy Reid is 6-1 lifetime against them. Expect his magic to continue on Sunday night when you’re looking for NFL picks Week 2.

Our Expert NFL Pick for This Game: Chiefs Money Line (-185)

Cowboys @ Chargers – NFL Week 2 Predictions and Picks

Cowboys played tough against the defending Super Bowl champions Buccaneers but lost on a last-minute field goal. In the time since DE Randy Gregory tested positive for COVID-19, fellow DE DeMarcus Lawrence suffered a broken foot and will miss two months of action, and RT La’el Collins was slapped with a five-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs. Safeties Donovan Wilson (groin) and Damontae Kazee were limited in practice all week and suddenly just a week into the season Cowboys found themselves in a very precarious situation.

The injury crisis is like music to Justin Herbert’s ears. Chargers' QB threw for 337 yards in the 20-16 win at WFT and now will face an extremely depleted Cowboys’ secondary. Yes, the Bolts had basically no running game against Washington with top rusher Austin Ekeler getting just 57 yards. But they may not need it on Sunday anyway.

Chargers lead the all-time series 6-5, winning the past three games. The line jumped from -1 to -3.5 in just 24 hours after Lawrence’s injury so I would advise not to touch the spread. But the money line is among the best NFL bets Week 2.

Our Expert NFL Pick for This Game: Chargers Money Line (-172)

49ers @ Eagles – NFL Week 2 Predictions and Picks

Week 2 of the NFL season is usually the week of overreactions. Eagles topped the hapless Falcons (32-6) and are the only NFC East team with a win. While the Niners barely escaped Detroit with a 41-33 win. The truth, however, is that SF were killing the Lions for 57 minutes and then CB Jason Verrett tore an ACL. Lions picked up on his replacement Dontae Johnson and made the final score much closer than it should’ve been. Despite the aerial assault in the final 180 seconds SF still held QB Jared Goff to under 6 yards per attempt.

Niners' depth will be tested on Sunday. In addition to Verrett the team lost RB Raheem Mostert to a season-ending knee injury and LB Dre Greenlaw underwent groin surgery that will sideline him for at least a month and a half. This pretty much explains all the betting action on the Eagles who opened the week as a 4.5-point underdog but climbed to 3-points by Wednesday.

Still, the Niners are the team to consider when you make your NFL picks Week 2. Kyle Shanahan’s plug-and-play system allowed rookie RB Elijah Mitchell to run for 104 yards in his debut against the Lions. CB Emmanuel Moseley should be ready to play on Sunday and DE Javon Kinlaw is expected to make his season debut. Niners covered the spread by a whisker so be careful with the line but don’t be afraid to back them. It’s one of those NFL picks Week 2 straight up that you simply cannot afford not to bet on.

Our Expert NFL Pick for This Game: 49ers Money Line (-147)

Rams @ Colts – NFL Week 2 Predictions and Picks

Rams' defense didn’t disappoint in Week 1 against the Bears with three sacks and an INT off QB Andy Dalton. Now it’s Carson Wentz’s turn to try and solve the puzzle. And he may have to do it without G Quenton Nelson who hasn’t practiced all week with back and foot ailments.

The Colts had a strange game against the Seahawks (16-28) limiting the visitors to 241 yards passing but allowing 14.1 yards per completion. And now QB Matthew Stafford comes to town to face a depleted defense with top LB Darius Leonard ill and nursing an ankle injury and CB Xavier Rhodes questionable with a strained calf. S Khari Willis ill and DE Kwity Paye is also questionable (hamstring).

Stafford was flawless against the Bears (20-for-26, 321 yards, 3 TDs, and a QB rating of 156.1). Look for him to do more of the same against the Colts. Rams’ problems playing in the Eastern time zone are well documented. But their roster is also stacked. Unlike the Colts. So in our NFL Week 2 predictions, the money line seems the best market to go for.

Our Expert NFL Pick for This Game: Rams Money Line (-179)

Picks in brief – NFL Week 2 Predictions and Picks

  • Saints @ Panthers (+3.5): Jameis Winston is 4-7 against the Panthers. Who may not be that bad as many thought.
  • Bengals (+2.5) @ Bears: There’s no consensus among the NFL expert picks Week 2. Andy Dalton is eager for revenge but Joe Burrow is on fire.
  • Texans @ Browns (-12.5): Browns are angry after the loss in KC. And the Texans will pay for it.
  • Broncos (-6) @ Jaguars: If the murmurs about Urban Meyer not getting well with the veteran players are true, the Jaguars are in for a veeeeeeeery long season.
  • Bills @ Dolphins under 47.5: Both offenses were very anemic in Week 1 and far from a midseason form.
  • Patriots (-5.5) @ Jets: QB Matt Jones was admirable against the Dolphins but is not Tom Brady. While fellow rookie Zach Wilson will be without his LT protector Mekhi Becton.
  • Raiders @ Steelers over 47: Raiders recently had little success in the Eastern time zone. But the offensive explosion against the Ravens was spectacular.
  • Vikings @ Cardinals over 50.5: Julio Jones and Kyler Murray. Adam Thielen and Kirk Cousins. Get ready for a lot of bombs.
  • Falcons @ Buccaneers (-12.5): Double digit spreads have no place in the NFL. But the Falcons were extremely terrible against the Eagles and look like the favorites for the top pick in next year’s draft. This seems the game to turn to for NFL Week 2 picks against the spread.
  • Titans (+6) @ Seahawks: Titans laid an enormous egg against the Cardinals but AFC South is so bad it may not matter.

Thursday Night Football: Giants @ WFT - NFL Week 2 Predictions and Picks

Week 2 of the season marks the real return of Thursday Night Football which means sloppy football, tired-looking teams on short rest, and mostly bad product. The Washington Football Team will look to end its negative streak against the NY Giants and avoid an 0-2 start and this is an important factor when making NFL Week 2 predictions on the Thursday Night Football line. WFT lost 16-20 at home to the Chargers on Sunday although the outcome could’ve easily been way different.

WFT was leading by three at the start of the fourth quarter and the defense just forced the second consecutive Chargers’ turnover in the red zone when RB Antonio Gibson coughed the ball on the 4-yard line. LA scored the winning TD just three plays later.

On Monday WFT placed QB Ryan Fitzpatrick on IR with a hip injury. Taylor Heinicke, who a year ago was taking math classes at the Old Dominion before going back to the NFL, will start after going 11-of-15 for 122 yards and a TD in relief of Fitzpatrick on Sunday. Not known for flashy plays, Heinicke is expected to be more than serviceable in the weeks until Fitzpatrick returns. The other name on the injury report is RB Antonio Gibson, who suffered a shoulder injury against the Chargers but is expected to play.

Giants lost 13-27 at home to the Broncos after a last-second TD made the score much more respectable. QB Daniel Jones’s stats looked respectable (22-of-37 for 267 yards and a TD) but lost a fumble deep into Denver territory at the end of the third quarter that ended a promising drive. RB Saquon Barkley was held to just 26 yards on 10 carries bothered by a knee injury. He is expected to play but the WFT defense allowed just 90 yards on the ground last Sunday and should be able to shut down Giants’ backs. Included in the injury report estimation LB Cam Brown (hamstring), TE Evan Engram (calf) and G Shane Lemieux (knee) will all be game-time decisions for the G-men.

WFT has lost its last five games against the Giants including a 20-23 decision last October in the US capital. They are traveling to Buffalo in Week 3 and a second consecutive loss before facing the Bills will be a disaster. Since 2007 just 12 of 118 teams that started 0-2 have made the playoffs so the losers of Thursday will have the feeling of a death sentence. The under looks like a decent possibility but, although not among the obvious NFL Picks Week 2 suggestions, the real bet here is the money line.

NFL Week 2 Picks & Predictions: The Main Betting Types

Whether you use expert picks or your own, when you come to bet on the chosen NFL Week 2 predictions, you will find a good variety of betting markets. Three that are always the most popular among football betting fans are:

  • Moneyline
  • Point Spread
  • Over/Under

Because these three markets are so popular, you will find them at every online sportsbook worth their salt. Let's take a quick look at each one in turn so that you know how they work when you come to explore the best NFL bets in Week 2.

NFL Picks Week 2 Straight Up

The straight-up or moneyline betting market is one of the simplest to understand. It offers odds about both of the teams involved in a particular game in the NFL and your job is just to bet on the team that you think will win. If your team wins as expected, your bet will also win and it will be settled at the odds you took. So when you’re seeing our NFL Picks Week 2 straight up, you should easily bet on them. Consider the following example:

TeamOdds
New England-230
New York Jets+190
NFL Week 2 Picks Straight Up Example

If you fancy New England to win in this match in the NFL against the New York Jets, you could bet on them at odds of -230. A stake of $230 would therefore give you a profit of $100 if they succeed. On the other hand, if you bet $100 on the New York Jets and they win the game, your profit would be $190.

NFL Week 2 Picks against the Spread

You will have seen from the NFL moneyline example given a moment ago that the odds for the two teams in a game can be quite different. In an effort to even up those odds, sportsbooks offer point spread markets that impose an artificial handicap on the favorite team. This gives the underdog team an equal and opposing advantage, and so the odds available tend to be much more balanced. Because of that, the NFL Week 2 Picks against the Spread are in such demand. Again, let's look at an example:

TeamSpreadOdds
New England-3.5-110
New York Jets+3.5-110
NFL Week 2 Picks Against the Spread Example

Here you'll see that the New England team has been given a handicap of -3.5 points, while the New York Jets have an advantage of +3.5 points. Bet on New England and they will need to win by 4 points or more for your bet to succeed. Bet on the New York Jets and that bet will only lose if the team loses by 4 points or more. With these conditions in place, the sportsbook is able to offer the same odds of -110 about both teams.

When you are using expert picks, you will surely be given NFL Week 2 picks against the spread. Simply bet on the named team in the point spread market and if the expert pick is correct, your bet will win.

NFL Picks Week 2 for Over/Under

The third main betting market for NFL Picks Week 2 is the Over/Under betting. Here you don't need to worry about which team you think will win the game. Instead, you only have to predict whether the total number of points scored in the game (by both teams combined) will be Over or Under a total figure quoted by the sportsbook. Incidentally, that's why this is also known as the Totals market. Here's an example to help explain the concept further:

Sportsbook TotalOdds
Over 42.5-110
Under 42.5-110
NFL Picks Week 2 for Over/Under

When you’re wondering how to bet on sports, and football is not an exception, betting Over/Under is just as simple as moneyline betting. Especially if you have NFL expert picks Week 2 to help guide you. All you have to do in this case is decide whether you think there will be over or under 42.5 points scored in the game as a whole. Bet Over and there would need to be 43 points or more scored for your bet to succeed. Bet Under and there would need to be 42 points or fewer scored for your bet to win. Check out our NFL Week 2 predictions to find the best over/under bets available and put a wager.
