West Virginia Online Casinos - All You Need to Know - HowToBet.com
West Virginia Best Online Casinos

West Virginia online casinos will give players in the state a more convenient way to enjoy their favourite games. This is something that shouldn’t surprise anyone. When West Virginia first legalized land-based casino gambling in 2007, it was a boon for the tourist industry. Neighboring states did not have casino gaming, so patrons flocked to the Mountain State to find a less expensive Las Vegas experience.

Now that most of those other states have their own casinos, customers are staying home. Online gaming has therefore been introduced as the next rung on the evolutionary ladder of gambling in the state, and it is likely to be a very popular one.

Gambling Legislation in West Virginia

West Virginia has a long history of gambling legislation, which, after many years, finally culminated in the 2019 bill that legalized online casinos and poker.

Horse and greyhound racing dates back to the 1930s. Real-money bingo and a state-run lottery got their start in the 1980s. By the 1990s, there were video lottery terminals at the state’s many racetracks.

In the 2000's, table games at retail casinos became the most popular form of gambling in the state. In 2018 state-wide sports betting was added to the mix. And now, in the early 2020's, if you can gamble on it in person, you can gamble on it over the internet.

The bill was HB 2934, also known as the West Virginia Lottery Interactive Wagering Act. Passed in March of 2019, it went unsigned by the governor, but when the veto window closed, it automatically became law. Full-scale online gambling, including online poker, was now legal.

WV Online Casino Games

All casino games will have to be approved by the West Virginia Lottery Commission (the regulatory body of all things gambling in the state) before the online casinos can take real-money wagers on them. But the chances are good that if you can play a game at retail casinos in the state, you will be able to play it online as well. Here's what to expect:

Slot Machines

Slots are popular the world over, and they will become the majority of the online gaming offerings in West Virginia. The casino experience wouldn’t be what it is today without the sights and sounds of the slot machines, be it in person or playing them online.

Video Poker

Every casino customer is familiar with Game King video poker. These machines are some of the most popular on the floor for the wide variety of poker playing options they offer. Online you won’t find as many options, but the most popular - like Jacks or Better, Draw Poker, and Bonus Poker - are sure to be approved by the commission.

Blackjack is the most popular of the card table games, and a casino floor is defined by its placement of blackjack tables. It is also one of the easiest table games to learn, meaning that it appeals to all levels of experience, adding to its online appeal.

Seeing a rise in popularity in recent years, baccarat is most known as the game of choice of James Bond, although it's not nearly as complicated as he makes it look. Because of the size of the table and the number of players, you may find mini-baccarat at online casinos instead of full-sized versions.

Another easy game to understand and simulate online, roulette will become a popular online offering. Online casinos will offer American roulette (two green spaces), and French and European versions may be included as well.

Three Card Poker

Available at all West Virginia retail casinos, expect to see Three Card Poker also offered online. It offers odds on hands, plays against a dealer, and it’s easy for anyone to learn.

Pai Gow

Another popular poker variation that is sure to be available on most online casino websites. You play against a banker (dealer or player) and make both a high five-card hand and a low two-card hand.

Live dealer games have also become very popular at online casinos across the country, but they require a studio and full-time staff, making them quite expensive to create and run. For that reason, there is likely to be a delay before they are offered in West Virginia.

Best WV Online Casinos

There aren’t any current and active online casinos just yet in West Virginia. But there are several in the pipeline, and we can make an educated prediction as to which casinos those will be, and which will be the place best suited for you to spend your money.

How We Choose the Best Casinos

The first thing we consider when choosing the best online casinos is game selection. This must be broad. Most casino gamblers like variety in the games they play, and we would never steer you to a website that doesn’t offer that.

Other aspects that we consider are the reliability of the online gaming experience, available deposit options, customer sercice provision and bonus offers.

We rank venues on the basis of all the points just mentioned, and highlight those that come out on top. Here are some of the best casinos that we expect to see in West Virginia before long:

DraftKings Casino

A welcome bonus, a deposit bonus, and a risk-free bet bonus all make DraftKings one of the better places to play. They are at the top of the online sportsbooks in West Virginia, and that will easily translate into their online casino when it opens.

In neighboring Pennsylvania, DraftKings was quick to make live dealer games available to customers there, making it more likely that they will prioritize that aspect of gaming in West Virginia. DraftKings is expected to be the top online casino in the state.

FanDuel Casino

With its relationship with The Greenbrier, a true icon of the state, it makes sense that when it’s time for The Greenbrier (or one of the other casinos) to put forth their online casino, FanDuel will be the choice. They have a wide selection of games, their free-bet bonuses are big and easy to use, and they are built on one of the better platforms in the industry.

FanDuel is newer to the online casino market, but innovation and one of the best mobile apps anywhere in the business make them a top choice for customers.

Another big name in the industry, and another name connected to The Greenbrier. BetMGM currently operates an online sportsbook in West Virginia.

As they have done in other states, it’s easy for them to integrate both a sportsbook and casino into a single online offering. They just need the regulations in place and the partnership with a retail casino to make it happen.

If the BetMGM casino brand doesn’t go online with The Greenbrier, they are likely to go online through someone else.

PokerStars Casino

There are no current plans for a PokerStars online casino. But as other online casinos go live and offer their own versions of online poker, it’s hard to see the world’s biggest poker provider staying away.

An interstate pact is the most likely scenario surrounding a PokerStars casino, which would allow West Virginia poker players to match their skills against other small states in the area.

West Virginia Retail Casinos

Any online casinos that come to West Virginia must be partnered with one of the following retail casinos. West Virginia state law limits the number of brick-and-mortar casinos operating in the state to just five.

The Casino Club at The Greenbrier

One of the most iconic properties anywhere in the United States, the Greenbrier Casino Club has been open since 2008.

The Greenbrier has current sportsbook partnerships with FanDuel and BetMGM.

Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races

Slot machines, table games, and a large 16-table poker room are featured in the casino, attached to a racecourse that runs thoroughbred horses year-round.

DraftKings runs the onsite and online sportsbook for Hollywood Casino.

Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack, and Resort

A large onsite casino with an attached racetrack that features thoroughbred horse racing six months of the year.

William Hill operates its onsite sportsbook but has yet to make the product available online.

Mardi Gras Casino and Resort

Mardi Gras boasts the largest poker room in the state (24 tables), a full floor of casino table games, and one of the two operating greyhound racetracks in the state.

You can bet on races, but there is no other sports betting associated with Mardi Gras. A potential online casino partner is unknown at this time.

Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack

The other greyhound track in the state, Wheeling Island has blackjack, craps, roulette, and more than 1,100 slot machines.

They are owned by the same company as Mardi Gras, and also have no natural partner for an online casino at this time.

West Virginia Online Casino Bonuses

As is the case elsewhere, West Virginia online casinos will offer bonuses to attract new customers. These will come in two main guises, known as the Welcome Bonus and the Deposit Bonus.

Welcome Bonus

A Welcome Bonus is free money, and everyone agrees that free money is the best money. Just register for a new account, and some online casinos will put a little money into it for risk-free wagers, that once played, can be withdrawn as cash. The idea here is that you can test out their casino before having to make a large financial commitment, which is definitely a good thing.

Deposit Bonus

Deposit bonuses tend to be considerably larger than welcome bonuses. You may get up to $100 for signing up, but you could get an additional $500 in matching funds when you make your first deposit as a new customer.

There will be playthrough requirements for all of that bonus money before it can be withdrawn. That means that if you get $500, as an example, you’ll have to wager $2,500 before the $500 becomes active in your account as cash.

This would be a 5x playthrough requirement and is quite common. It’s also a great way to build your bankroll while minimizing your personal risk.

Loyalty Programs

If you’ve been to a retail casino, the chances are good that someone there asked you to sign up for their rewards program. It’s almost always free and it’s always a good idea to join. Well, the same kind of programs are offered at online casinos, too.

As you play, you'll earn loyalty points. And as your point total rises, so does your loyalty rewards status, making you eligible for even better gifts - like free plays, bonus boosts, and free dinners and stays at partner hotels and casinos. If a loyalty program is available, always sign up, and always have your account number ready to use.

Other Possible Promotions

There will be other ways in which a casino will encourage your loyalty. For example, you may be offered a bonus for referring new online customers, which is a quick and easy way to get bonus money for you and your friend.

Some online casinos may offer daily promotions on specific games. There may be jackpot drawings for frequent players, and other special giveaways to reward their best and most loyal customers.

Signing Up with West Virginia Online Casinos

When it comes to signing up for a new account with a West Virginia online casino, you'll be pleased to hear that the process is easy and straightforward.

Based on what we’ve seen from the online sportsbooks operating in the state of West Virginia, the information that an online casino will ask you to provide is:

  • First and last name
  • Mailing address
  • Email address
  • Date of birth
  • Phone number
  • The final four digits of your Social Security number
  • Unique username
  • Password

You will then be prompted to answer a pair of security questions and decide if you want to opt-in to a two-factor notification. This means that each time your account is accessed, a PIN will be sent to your mobile phone that must be used to complete that access. It’s just one more way to make sure your account is safe.

Also, during registration, you may be asked for a promotion code or deposit code. If you have one, now is the time to use it to ensure that you receive the bonus offers we talked about in the previous section.

Banking at West Virginia Online Casinos

Some things may change a little by the time WV online casinos go live. And not all casinos will offer the same thing. Based on what online sportsbooks offer in the state, we can make some predictions about how online casinos will operate. And when it comes to banking, these are likely to be your options.

West Virginia online casinos will likely offer the following deposit options:

  • Online bill pay/bank transfer/wire transfer
  • ACH/eCheck
  • Credit and debit cards (Visa and Mastercard)
  • PayPal
  • Skrill
  • Neteller
  • Play+ prepaid card
  • PayNearMe
  • Cash paid in person at the casino cage

Despite how common credit card payments are to an online casino, some banks still won’t allow the transactions to go through. Or they treat the payment like a cash advance and charge an extra fee.

This is why it’s always recommended that you check with your issuing bank before making any deposits with a credit card.

This is also one of the reasons that we, and the online casinos, recommend online bill pay or bank transfer whenever it is offered. It’s fast, secure, less prone to fraud, and doesn’t come with the risk of other fees. Any of the e-wallet options - PayPal, Skrill, and Neteller - are also recommended because of this reason.

Many of the methods of deposit can be reversed into an easy and fast withdrawal. If that isn’t available, these are the ways that you will be able to get your money back from most online casinos in West Virginia.

  • ACH/eCheck
  • PayPal
  • Personal check
  • Cash received in person at the casino cage

There may be delays of a couple of days in getting your withdrawals - or longer with personal checks. Which is another reason to do an electronic transfer of funds whenever possible.

West Virginia Online Casino FAQ

What kind of online gambling is legal in West Virginia?

Lawmakers in West Virginia have legalized what is known as the big three of online gaming – sports betting, casino games, and poker.

Even though casino gaming has been in the state for several years, online slots and table games were just legalized in 2019, a year after sports betting was legalized.

So right now, sports betting in the state is ahead of the other two and is easier to find. Several retail casinos in the state are working to build online casinos and will have them up and running in the very near future.

How many casinos does West Virginia have?

West Virginia has five brick-and-mortar casinos. This is the maximum number of land-based casinos permitted by state law.

Who can gamble at West Virginia online?

Anyone who is at least 21 years old and inside the state lines of West Virginia is allowed to place real-money wagers. Visitors and residents can both place wagers as long as they are physically in the state.

The IP address from a customer’s web browser and/or geolocation data from a mobile device will be used to confirm the location of the bettor before any bets are allowed.

Will online casino gaming accounts be linked to online sportsbook accounts?

At the moment, this is unknown. It is possible that if FanDuel, which is already the sportsbook face of The Greenbrier, becomes The Greenbrier’s chosen online casino operator, that both their online sportsbook and casino will be linked.

That’s what they’ve done in other states, so it would make sense for it to happen in West Virginia. But since none of the online casinos have gone live yet, it’s impossible to say with any certainty exactly how they’ll be set up.

Does West Virginia support responsible gaming?

All casinos are members of the West Virginia Gaming and Racing Association, which requires its members to follow a set of guidelines designed to prevent the financial harm of their customers.

West Virginia also supports self-exclusion lists. By sending a written request to the West Virginia Lottery Commission, a customer can ask to be banned from entering any of the state’s gambling locations and online casinos and sportsbooks. Self-exclusion can last anywhere from one to five years and is lifted at the customer’s request.

If a player is struggling to identify if they do have a gambling addiction, trained specialists are on staff at West Virginia casinos and are available to help.
