Week 9 NFL Picks: Predictions in Detail

Monday Night Football: Bears @ Steelers – NFL Week 9 Predictions and Picks

Monday Night Football schedule has been brutal so far in 2021 and Week 9 won’t be different. The 3-5 Bears visit the 4-3 Steelers to officially mark the midseason point. Pittsburgh is on a three-game winning streak but still owns a negative point differential. While the Bears are a real mess offensively and the return of head coach Matt Nagy will only make things worse.

Nagy missed last week’s loss to the 49ers after being diagnosed with COVID. In his absence QB Justin Fields ran for 103 yards but you can throw out of the window this stat with Nagy’s conservative approach. Coincidentally stopping the run is what Steelers’ defense does best because, after all, it has to deal with Lamar Jackson twice a year. The unit is ranked fifth in DVOA and looking from this angle the NFL Week 9 predictions seem obvious.

The Bears are expected to be without their two best defensive players. LB Khalil Mack (foot) and CD Eddie Jackson (hamstring) haven’t practiced at all as is LB Alec Ogletree. Without their top LBs the Bears were carved up last Sunday by the Niners who ran for 145 yards in just 26 attempts (5.6 YPC). Najee Harris is probably drooling waiting for Monday night.

For some weird reason Steelers HC Mike Tomlin has never beaten the Bears. With a 0-3 career record it’s time for his first win against the Monsters of Midway. With back-to-back home games against Chicago and Detroit it’s the perfect opportunity for the Steelers to make a move in probably the most unpredictable AFC division.

Our Expert NFL Pick for This Game: Steelers -6 (-110)

Sunday Night Football: Titans @ Rams – NFL Week 9 Predictions and Picks

A week ago this would’ve been a must-see TV: The Irresistible Force vs. The Immovable Object. Derrick Henry vs. the best defensive unit in the league. But Titans’ RB was placed on IR after breaking a bone in the foot and the NFL Week 9 predictions got a little bit easier, it seems.

And Henry is just the tip of the iceberg of the Titans’ injury crisis. Backup CBs Chris Jackson and Greg Mabin are dealing with ankle problems. Starting tackle Taylor Lewan popped on the injury report on Thursday with a knee ailment. In all, more than half a dozen starters are questionable or worse for Sunday.

On the other side QB Matt Stafford was a non-participant in all Rams’ practices this week (he declared that he’ll play on Sunday for what it’s worth) as was WR Robert Woods. CB Jalen Ramsey was limited with a knee injury and the newcomer Von Miller is battling a twisted ankle and his status is up in the air.

In Henry’s absence Titans’ running game will be limited to Jeremy McNichols (246 career rushing yards, seven attempts this season) and rookie Tory Carter who is yet to appear in a game. FB Khari Blasingame is in concussion protocol and whether he clears it by Sunday is anybody’s guess.

Cardinals’ loss against the Packers opened the door to the NFC West title. Rams have two straight primetime appearances before their bye week. They can’t afford any slip ups against a team that needs to figure out his new identity. The line dropped to -7 so feel free to back the Rams in NFL Week 9 picks against the spread.

Our Expert NFL Pick for This Game: Rams -7 (-110)

Packers @ Chiefs – NFL Week 9 Predictions and Picks

It’s one of the strangest games in this week’s schedule. Packers were riding high after the 24:21 win over the Cardinals when the news broke that QB Aaron Rodgers has tested positive for COVID-19. And because he is unvaccinated, he will not only miss the trip to KC but maybe the home game against the Seahawks as well.

But first thing first. QB Jordan Love, who threw seven passes against New Orleans in Week 1, will make his first career start. Selected 26th in last year’s draft, the former Utah State signal caller will have the chance to make the case for being the starter in 2022. Unfortunately for the Packers they are so thin at QB that they signed Blake Bortles as an emergency option, giving him a couple of days to learn as much of the playbook as he can.

The line opened at KC -2.5, went down to Pick ‘Em after Chiefs’ dreadful performance against the Giants on Monday and jumped by a score after Rodgers’ test. It’s understandable that the public money went on KC but it’s worth noting that GB beat the Cardinals on the ground. The Packers ran for 151 yards and threw for 184 and Love is a perfect fit for this plan. Moreover, he’s facing the second-worst in terms of DVOA defense in the league.

The Chiefs have been among the worst ATS teams in 2021. They’ve covered only just once this season and it was against WFT. The league has caught up to QB Patrick Mahomes and the Packers, despite missing a number of key figures, are ranked fourth in defensive DVOA. If you decide to include this game in your Week 9 NFL picks – bet on the Packers.

Our Expert NFL Pick for This Game: Packers +7.5 (-115)

Browns @ Bengals – NFL Week 9 Predictions and Picks

There’s only one division with three teams with winning records and it’s the AFC North. Bengals were knocked off the top spot a week ago after a humiliating 34:31 loss against the Jets. At the same time Browns’ season took a turn for the worse after WR Jarvis Landry dropped passes in key moments in the 15:10 loss at home to the Steelers.

The last couple of days Cleveland was a center stage of the “OBJ against the world” drama. Browns’ wideout wasn’t traded, his father went on a rant on Twitter about lack of targets and the last two days Beckham was absent from practice while his agent discussed the terms of his eventual release.

On the injury front, the Browns will be sweating about DE Jadeveon Clowney’s status and two-fifths of their OL is on the injury report. While the Bengals are as healthy as they’ve never been this season.

In his injury-shortened rookie season QB Joe Burrow threw for 722 yards with 7 TDs vs. 1 INT for a 100.2 rating against the Browns. The former #1 pick had his down to Earth moment last week when the Bengals fell in the trap. Just before the bye week it’s time to clean up their game and right the ship towards the playoffs. It is not the most obvious NFL Week 9 picks but I’ll back the Bengals.

Our Expert NFL Pick for This Game: Bengals Money Line (-133)

Texans @ Dolphins – NFL Week 9 Predictions and Picks

Many call this the Toilet Bowl. Two 1-7 teams against each other. One of them is winless at home, the other – winless on the road. And why would one choose this for NFL Week 9 predictions? Two words: Tyrod Taylor.

Texans were 1-0 and leading away from home against the Browns when Texans’ QB suffered a hamstring injury. Without him the team went 0-7 and dropped to 32nd on offense in the league. But Taylor is now healthy and on Thursday was officially announced as a starter.

At the same time Dolphins’ QB Tua Tagovailoa is dealing with a finger injury in addition to the chronic ribs’ ailments. He already missed a couple of games and is winless in six starts in 2021. Alongside Tagovailoa, WR DeVante Parker is doubtful with shoulder and hamstring injuries. In addition S Brandon Jones (ankle) and LB Jerome Baker (knee) haven’t practiced at all this week.

These two teams are bad. Really bad teams. But at least there aren’t any grumblings from the Texans’ locker room while Dolphins HC Brian Flores is on the hot seat. The line opened at -7 and dropped by a point-and-a-half. But still, for a 1-7 team 5.5 points is too much of a trust.

Our Expert NFL Pick for This Game: Texans +5.5 (-108)

Thursday Night Football: Jets @ Colts - NFL Week 9 Predictions and Picks

One of the teams is reeling after a blown 14-points lead and two late interceptions cost a chance to close the gap to AFC South leaders Tennessee Titans. The other is basking in glory after a career backup became just the second QB ever to throw for 400+ yards in his first professional start. The season continues with the Colts at home to the Jets on Thursday Night Football and we’re off with our Week 9 NFL picks.

On Sunday the Colts were in a strong position to beat the Titans. But QB Carson Wentz inexplicable left-handed pass with 93 seconds to go in regulation and an INT midway through the overtime led to the 34-31 loss. Now all the momentum after two straight wins is gone. At 3-5 the Colts are 1.5 games out of the AFC playoffs but with four teams ahead of them and games against Buffalo, Tampa Bay, New England and Arizona still to come it will be an uphill battle.

The Jets got their second win of the season (and strangely, once again versus a playoff team), beating the Bengals 34-31 with backup QB Mike White throwing for 405 yards despite not having a completion longer than 20 yards. The former Western Kentucky gunslinger also became the first Jets QB with a 400-yards passing game since the turn of the century! And now they have a QB controversy with rookie Zach Wilson still sidelined with a knee injury and veteran Joe Flacco, for whom they traded a week ago, still learning the system!

The Jets put only one significant name on their initial injury report. RT George Fant is questionable after suffering an ankle injury in Sunday’s win. WR Corey Davis is still missing but he was sidelined against the Bengals as well and his absence wasn’t felt.

The Colts, however, placed DL Tyquan Lewis on the IR with a knee injury. G Quenton Nelson, who already had a stint on the IR, is dealing with a fresh toe injury. And WR T.Y. Hilton is in concussion protocol, which, given the short time before the next game, almost certainly rules him out.

The Colts won two of the last three against the Jets, including a 36-7 drubbing in September of 2020. Back then it was Phillip Rivers at QB. Carson Wentz is too erratic and it showed last Sunday. They should win but I will back the Jets as interesting NFL Week 9 picks against the spread.

Our Expert NFL Pick for This Game: Jets +10.5 (-110)

Week 9 NFL Picks in Brief

  • Falcons (+6.5) @ Saints: Saints lost QB Jameis Winston for the season and neither Taysom Hill, nor Trevor Siemian instill any confidence.
  • Broncos (+10.5) @ Cowboys: The ‘Boys are 7-0 ATS this season. Sooner or later it has to happen.
  • Patriots (ML) @ Panthers: Panthers’ QB Sam Darnold never had any success against Bill Belichick.
  • Vikings @ Ravens (-5.5): The Ravens like to run. The Vikings are not good at preventing it. This one belongs to the NFL Week 9 best bets.
  • Bills @ Jaguars (+14.5): At -14 I would’ve recommended taking the Bills as a part of any NFL Week 9 picks against the spread parlay. But the way they covered last Sunday at home against the Dolphins was criminal.
  • Raiders (ML) @ Giants: The Raiders are the better team but it’s an early start on the East Coast. The Giants are dealing with a COVID outbreak.
  • Chargers @ Eagles (+3): Eagles ran the ball 46 times last week and (although against the Lions) were dominant. Chargers are still last against the run.
  • Cardinals @ 49ers (ML): Niners are winless at home but The Hobbit left hobbled the game against the Packers.

Explaining The Main Betting Types

After deciding to go with the special selection of NFL Week 9 predictions by experts, your next job is to know and understand the specifics of the betting markets. The three most popular among football betting aficionados are:

  • Moneyline
  • Point Spread
  • Over/Under

They all are available at every online sportsbook, so let's have a look at each one in order to explain how they work. This will help you be 100% ready to explore the NFL best bets for Week 9.

NFL Week 9 Picks Straight Up

The straight up or moneyline betting market is probably the simplest to understand. Here you will be offered odds about both of the teams involved in a NFL game and your only job is to bet on the team that you think will win. If your prediction is correct, your bet is a winning one and it will be settled at the odds you took. In short, when you see our NFL Week 9 picks straight up, you should be able to bet on them easily. Check the following example:

TeamOdds
Cleveland Browns+130
Cincinnati Bengals-150
NFL Week 9 Picks Straight Up Example

So if you fancy Cleveland to win the NFL game against the favorite Cincinnati, you could bet on the Browns at odds of +130. A stake of $100 would therefore give you a profit of $130 if they succeed. On the other hand, you have to bet $150 on Cincinnati and the Bengals have to win the game for your profit to be $100. This is as straightforward an example as you would find. Now you should be ready to take advantage of our NFL Week 9 picks straight up.

NFL Week 9 Picks against the Spread

NFL Week 9 Picks against the Spread
NFL Week 9 Picks against the Spread

People look for NFL Week 9 picks against the spread because the odds for the two teams in a particular game can be quite different. By trying to even them up, all sportsbooks offer point spread markets that impose an artificial handicap on the favorite team. The spreads give the underdog team an equal and opposing advantage, and consequently, the odds available tend to be much more balanced. That’s why picks against the spread are in such demand. See this example:

TeamSpreadOdds
Chicago Bears+6.5-110
Pittsburgh Steelers-6.5-110
NFL Week 9 Picks Against the Spread

Here you see Chicago being given an advantage of +6.5 points, while Pittsburgh has a handicap of -6.5 points. If you put a bet on Pittsburgh, the Steelers will need to win by 7 points or more for you to succeed. Bet on Chicago and that wager will only lose if the Bears lose by 7 points or more. With these conditions in place, the sportsbook is able to offer even odds for both teams.

When you are using expert predictions, you will surely be given NFL Week 9 picks against the spread. Just wager on the named team in the point spread market and you’ll have your winning bet served on a plate if the pick is correct.

NFL Week 9 Over/Under Picks

The over/under betting is the third main betting market for Week 9 NFL Picks. Here you only have one job: to predict whether the total number of points scored in the game by both teams combined will be Over or Under a total figure quoted by the sportsbook. Logically, that’s why this is also known as the Totals market. See the following example to understand the concept better:

GameSportsbook TotalOdds
Denver Broncos @ Dallas CowboysOver 49.5/Under 49.5-110/-110
NFL Week 9 Over/Under Picks

The over/under betting is just as simple as moneyline betting, especially if you have access to free NFL expert picks for Week 9 to help guide you. In this type of wagering all you have to do is decide whether you think there will be over or under 49.5 points scored in the game by both teams combined. If you go for Over, there would need to be 50 points or more for your wager to succeed. Go for Under and there would need to be 49 points or fewer for your bet to win. Check out our NFL Week 9 predictions, find the best over/under bets available and put a wager.
