NFL Week 5 Picks: Predictions in Detail

Monday Night Football: Colts @ Ravens – NFL Week 5 Predictions and Picks

Tied on top of the AFC North with Cleveland and Cincinnati, Baltimore is looking to remain perfect at home against a team from the undoubtedly worst division in football – AFC South. No team in it has a winning record and despite being 1-3 the Colts are just a game out of first place. Welcome to the Monday Night hell of the NFL Week 5 predictions!

The Ravens are on a three-game winning streak and just broke the NFL all-time record for consecutive games with at least 100 yards rushing. But here comes the interesting part: despite being ranked 15th in rush defense (114.0 YPG) the advanced metrics somehow love the Colts and have them fifth. Probably because they’ve given up just one rushing TD this season. But the 4.3 yards per attempt doesn’t sound promising against the third best rushing offense both in yards per game (164.5) and yards per attempt (5.2).

The Ravens put those impressive numbers on the ground despite the absence of RT Ronnie Stanley. The Notre Dame product is not expected to play on Sunday and his replacement Alejandro Villanueva is questionable with a knee injury. The good news for the Ravens is that Villanueva missed most of last week’s game against the Broncos as well and the team still won comfortably. So maybe it’s not that big of a deal after all.

The Colts have their own injury issues on the offensive line. G Quenton Nelson is on the IR, starting C Ryan Kelly missed Friday’s practice with a groin injury and starting RT Braden Smith is battling foot and thumb ailments. And DE Kwity Paye is doubtful with a hamstring injury.

Colts are one of the most disappointing teams of the season but so is the whole division. With a stretch of five straight games against teams with non-winning records to come, their vision should be shifted towards next week. Ravens should win this one easily and I recommend them in any parlay with NFL Week 5 picks against the spread.

Our Expert NFL Pick for This Game: Ravens -6.5 (-118)

Sunday Night Football: Bills @ Chiefs – NFL Week 5 Predictions and Picks

It’s a rematch of the AFC Championship game back in January which the Chiefs won 38-24. But things are different this time. The Bills are riding a three-game winning streak during which they gave up a total of 21 points and pitched two shutouts. The streak not only propelled them to the top of DVOA standings but their defense is leading the second-placed Saints by the incredible 31%!

This one is the dream matchup: top-ranked offense (Chiefs are almost 12% ahead of the Rams) against the top-ranked defense. In the modern NFL the offense usually wins but the Chiefs’ defense is almost historically bad. Only Atlanta has given up more points and only the Seahawks have given up more yards than KC. And Steve Spagnuolo’s soft coverage is turning all Chiefs games into a shootout.

The total for Sunday Night Football has been set at 57.5 but the Bills have hit the over just once this season. Playing against the worst rush defense (according to the advanced stats) should help controlling the tempo and keeping QB Patrick Mahomes off the field. Many of the NFL expert picks Week 5 have the Chiefs covering. But, you know, revenge is a dish best served cold…

Our Expert NFL Pick for This Game: Bills +3.5 (-132)

Giants @ Cowboys – NFL Week 5 Predictions and Picks

This is the third straight home game for the Cowboys and the last until Halloween. Dallas has a bye week sandwiched between visits to New England and Minnesota left in October and a perfect home stretch is a must on the road to the NFC East title. The Cowboys annihilated both the Eagles and the Panthers and this might be one of the NFL's best bets in week 5.

Giants’ receiving corps have been decimated once again with WR Sterling Shepard (hamstring) and WR Darius Slayton (hamstring) both held out of practice this week. S Jabrill Peppers is also doubtful with a hamstring injury and his eventual absence will be a big blow for a defense that is 20th against the pass in YPG and 22nd in DVOA.

For the Cowboys, RB Ezezkiel Elliott (knee) and WR Amari Cooper (hamstring) made a surprising visit to the injury report on Wednesday but were back at practice on Thursday and should be good to go. S Donovan Wilson (groin) and DE Dorance Armstrong (ankle) are the only questionable players for Sunday.

The Giants won the last-to-date game (23-19 in NY in January) to stop a seven-game losing streak against America’s Team. But anything other than a Cowboys victory will be a huge surprise. After all their offensive coordinator is Jason Garrett, the former Dallas head coach who is known for his conservative approach. Giants’ running game has been non-existent (21st in YPG, 22nd in DVOA) the whole season, and passing against Dallas looks easy on paper (315.3 YPG) but this is the team with the most interceptions in the league.

Our Expert NFL Pick for This Game: Cowboys -6.5 (-125)

Lions @ Vikings – NFL Week 5 Predictions and Picks

It’s not easy to find a 1-3 team with a positive point differential. But this is the case with the Vikings who sit next-to-last in the NFC North standings and even this early in the season are hanging by a thread in the playoff hunt. The only team behind them in the standings? Well, there’s no prize for guessing – the 0-4 Lions.

Both of Detroit’s losses at home were by a score. But on the road, things don’t look good. The Lions had a strong first half against the Packers in Week 2 but simply disappeared after the break. And last week in Chicago they simply stank against a rookie QB making his second NFL start.

The Vikings are a middling team by all definitions. According to the advanced stats they are 14th on offense and 14th on defense. They are 17th in PPG and 12th in opponents’ PPG. They give up a lot of yards (389.0 YPG) and cover a lot of yards (395.3 YPG, 15th). They simply aren’t turning them into points. And the 7-14 loss to the Browns was a good example.

The Vikings are on a seven-game winning streak against the Lions. But with the line jumping by more than two points already I don’t see this among good NFL Week 5 picks against the spread. So I’ll take the over and hope the Vikings fare well against one of the worst NFL defenses.

Our Expert NFL Pick for This Game: Over 49 (-110)

Eagles @ Panthers – NFL Week 4 Predictions and Picks

The Panthers fell down to Earth in Week 4, losing 36-28 in Dallas despite being on a long week. But they were missing the All-World RB Christian McCaffrey who according to the team is in line for a somewhat surprise appearance on Sunday. And facing a rush defense, ranked 28th in DVOA, should be a big boost.

The Eagles fell to 1-3 after a 12-point loss in a shootout with the Chiefs. The defense has given up more than 40 points in back-to-back games and the unit is ranked 24th in DVOA. While this may be a product of facing Dallas and KC in back-to-back weeks there’s no denying the team is struggling.

Eagles’ offensive line is still in flux with T Lane Johnson not practicing due to a personal matter and T Jordan Mailata working his way back from a knee injury. Panthers’ starting LT Cam Erving is questionable with a knee injury and LB Shaq Thompson (foot) has not practiced the last couple of days. The team traded for CB Stephon Gilmore but he’s ineligible to play on Sunday.

Carolina’s defense is one of the best in the NFL even after last week’s performance in Dallas. Ranked 4th (behind only Buffalo, Cleveland and NO) the Panthers is one of just four teams in the Top 10 both against the run and against the pass. And this spells a very long day for the Eagles’ QB Jaylen Hurts. I think this game should be on everyone’s NFL Week picks straight up list.

Our Expert NFL Pick for This Game: Panthers Money Line (-103)

Thursday Night Football: Rams @ Seahawks - NFL Week 5 Predictions and Picks

An NFC West (or how they usually refer to it "NFC Best") showdown to start Week 5. The winner goes second in the standings while the loser may find himself at the bottom depending on the Cardinals – 49ers outcome. This is the start of three consecutive weeks with prime-time appearances for the Seahawks, who showed uninspired football the last three weeks but somehow managed to stay afloat. And it’s hard to see them as a part of NFL best bets Week 5.

The Seahawks are coming off a 28-21 win in San Francisco against a team that lost its starting QB and the kicker in the first quarter, dominated totally before halftime but a missed FG and a fumbled kickoff negated the 2:1 Niners’ advantage in yards. RB Rashaad Penny was placed the day before the game on IR and the team struggled on the ground with just 105 yards and a quarter of them coming from QB Russell Wilson. Wilson himself had a pedestrian day (16-of-23 for 149 yards and 2 TDs) and the Seahawks offense is still not clicking.

The Rams suffered their first loss against the Cardinals (20-37) in three years. QB Matthew Stafford was picked off early, RB Sony Michel lost a fumble and K Matt Gay missed an FG in the third quarter ending the hopes for a comeback. Head coach Sean McVay took the blame for the loss for “the Rams not playing complementary football” and it’s interesting what changes he can make in a short week of preparation.

Despite being on 19th in YPG on offense, 18th in rushing, and 18th in passing, the advanced metrics love the Seahawks ranking them at #4, two spots behind the Rams. But the difference on defense, especially against the pass, is startling.

DE Darrell Taylor popped up on the Seahawks’ injury report with an ankle sprain and given the short week he may not be able to play on Thursday. WR D’Wayne Eskridge is still in concussion protocol and the time is running out. LB Carlos Dunlap II is also questionable with a turf toe. And according to HC Sean McVay “injuries in Week 4 were only bumps and bruises” so the Rams should be in full force on Thursday.

Division rivalries are weird and often tough to call. The Rams won in Seattle in January with a combination of Jared Goff and John Wolford at QB. Now they have Matthew Stafford. In a week filled with close matchups, this one should be no different. The Seahawks have won nine consecutive games played on Thursday and based on this many NFL expert picks Week 5 back them. But the Rams are not a favorable matchup.

Our Expert NFL Pick for This Game: Rams Money Line (-133)

Week 5 NFL Picks in Brief

  • Jets @ Falcons under 45: With Calvin Ridley reportedly out who will Matt Ryan throw the ball to?
  • Packers (-3) @ Bengals: As usual the Packers are perfect in the regular season under Matt LaFleur.
  • Patriots (-8.5) @ Texans: Poor Davis Mills! Panthers, Bills and Patriots in his first three NFL starts…
  • Titans @ Jaguars (+4.5): The end of the winless streak is near. Maybe this is the week?
  • Broncos @ Steelers under 39.5: The age is finally catching up to Big Ben. One of the hardest NFL Week 5 picks…
  • Dolphins @ Buccaneers under 48: Two bad outings in a row and the talk of a Buccaneers’ repeat  has gone quiet.
  • Saints (ML) @ WFT: WFT is lucky to be 2-2. The Saints should’ve been 3-1.
  • Bears (+5.5) @ Raiders: The Raiders are winning at home but haven’t had an easy game in 2021.
  • Browns @ Chargers (ML): Baker Mayfield is playing with a torn labrum. And it showed against the Vikings despite the win.
  • 49ers (+5) @ Cardinals: The line jumped already by 3 points after a heavy betting on Cardinals. But the Niners are unbeaten away from home.

Week 5 NFL Picks: Explaining The Main Betting Types

There is a big variety of betting markets when you come to wager on the chosen NFL Week 5 predictions. The three that are undoubtedly the most popular among football betting aficionados are:

  • Moneyline
  • Point Spread
  • Over/Under

It’s not a surprise that because of their huge popularity, you will find these three markets at every accomplished online sportsbook. We will have a quick look at each one now so that we help you understand completely how they work. This way you will be 100% ready to begin exploring the NFL best bets Week 5 can offer.

NFL Week 5 Picks against Spread

NFL Week 5 Picks against Spread
NFL Week 5 Picks against Spread

People look for NFL Week 5 picks against spread because the odds for the two teams in a particular game can be quite different. By trying to even them up, all sportsbooks offer point spread markets that impose an artificial handicap on the favorite team. The spreads give the underdog team an equal and opposing advantage, and consequently the odds available tend to be much more balanced. Because of that, the NFL Week 5 picks against spread are in such demand. See this example:

TeamSpreadOdds
Green Bay Packers-3.5-115
Cincinnati Bengals+3.5-105
NFL Week 5 Picks against Spread Example

In this example for NFL Week 5 picks against the spread, you see Green Bay being given a handicap of -3.5 points, while Cincinnati has an advantage of +3.5 points. If you put a bet on Green Bay, the Packers will need to win by 4 points or more for you to succeed. Bet on Cincinnati and that wager will only lose if the Bengals lose by 4 points or more. With these conditions in place, the sportsbook is able to offer attractive odds for both teams.

When you are using expert predictions, you will surely be given NFL Week 5 picks against the spread. Just wager on the named team in the point spread market and you’ll have your winning bet served on a plate if the expert pick is correct.

NFL Week 5 Picks Straight Up

The straight-up or moneyline betting market is probably the simplest to understand. Here you will be offered odds about both of the teams involved in an NFL game and your only job is to bet on the team that you think will win. If your prediction is correct, your bet is a winning one and it will be settled at the odds you took. In short, when you see our NFL Week 5 picks straight up, you should be able to bet on them easily. Check the following example:

TeamOdds
New England Patriots-405
Houston Texans+320
NFL Week 5 Picks Straight Up Example

So if in your NFL Week 5 picks straight up you fancy New England to win the NFL game against Houston, you could bet on the Patriots at odds of -405. A stake of $405 would therefore give you a profit of $100 if they succeed. On the other hand, if you bet $100 on Houston and the Texans win the game, your profit would be $320. This is as straightforward an example as you would find. Now you should be ready to take advantage of our NFL Week 5 picks straight up.

Week 5 NFL Picks for Over/Under

The over/under betting is the third main betting market for Week 5 NFL Picks. Here you only have one job: to predict whether the total number of points scored in the game by both teams combined will be Over or Under a total figure quoted by the sportsbook. Logically, that’s why this is also known as the Totals market. See the following example to understand the concept better:

Sportsbook TotalOdds
Over 54.5-110
Under 54.5-110
Week 5 NFL Picks for Over/Under

The over/under betting is just as simple as moneyline betting, especially if you have NFL expert picks Week 5 to help guide you. In this type of wagering all you have to do is decide whether you think there will be over or under 54.5 points scored in the game by both teams combined. If you go for Over, there would need to be 55 points or more for your wager to succeed. Go for Under and there would need to be 54 points or fewer for your bet to win. Check out our NFL Week 5 predictions, find the best over/under bets available, and put a wager.
