Online Gambling in New Mexico

While most states have unambiguous laws in place when it comes to online gambling, New Mexico is not the case. There are no New Mexico online gambling options available at this time, but those sites technically aren’t illegal according to state law.

Even though New Mexico does not technically have rules in place to prohibit online gambling, no one has really attempted to challenge these laws. This could be a state that is able to launch iGaming quickly, but there will have to be some work done by lawmakers.

A Brief History of New Mexico Online Gambling

When New Mexico came into the United States, there was not a big casino industry present. That included New Mexico online gambling, and lawmakers did not draft any law for this industry.

New Mexico is one of a handful of states that does not have a law prohibiting online gambling. However, it has not passed a law to allow the industry to launch. It is the same way for sports betting, and that law has actually been challenged by Native American tribes.

At some point, New Mexico lawmakers are going to have to take a stance on online gambling. Especially as the industry continues to grow. It appears that this is a state that will eventually allow this form of gambling to take place. However, recent history might contradict that thought.

New Mexico Online Gambling: The Current Law

House Bill 101 was introduced by a pair of representatives in January. That was really the first time that online betting of any kind was discussed. This bill would have allowed for both retail and online sports betting. But there wasn’t much support for that piece of legislation.

If New Mexico online sports betting is ultimately approved, that could lead the way for online casino gambling. This has been a process taken by several states throughout the US. It could be a path that New Mexico lawmakers follow as well.

Legal Online Sportsbooks in New Mexico

There are not any legal online sportsbooks in New Mexico. But you can find sportsbooks available in the state, thanks to Native American tribes. A handful of tribes took it upon themselves to offer sports betting at their casinos even though there is now a law in place.

New Mexico actually became the 6th US state to offer sports betting. That was done without the approval of the government. The Pueblo of Santa Ana Tribe launched sports betting on October 18. There are now five casinos that will accept wagers on sporting events.

The Navajo Nation does have land in New Mexico. It could become a huge force in the sports betting industry. Casinos and race tracks in New Mexico would love to offer sports betting, but they will have to wait until a law is in place.

Sports Betting in New Mexico

Since sports betting is currently only offered at a handful of tribal casinos, this is not a large market. There are other states that could soon join the industry, but it’s unclear when that will take place.

Things won’t really pick up until some of the top operators decide to launch in the state. But at least there are some options available. Here are some of the top betting markets you will find in New Mexico and a description of each:

Moneyline

If you are someone that is new to sports betting, then placing a money line wager is a great place to start. With this type of bet, you simply pick which team or individual will come out on top in a certain game.

Points Spread

If you have heard the term “betting against the spread,” then that is referring to a points spread bet. With this type of bet, you not only have to pick the outcome, but you also have to bet on how close the final score will be. This bet does add some degree of difficulty, but it is popular with basketball and football markets.

Totals (Over/Under)

A total bet is also popular with football and basketball, but you will see this offered in other sports as well. An over/under bet is placed on the total number of points, runs, or goals that are scored by both teams in a game.

Prop Bets

You won’t see many prop bets offered by tribal casinos, but this will be a popular option if sports betting expands. Prop bets are wagers placed on individual or team accomplishments during a game and are usually reserved for the top sports events.

Future Bets

Future bets usually are made on a result that will occur at the end of a season. These bets usually are made on which team will win a title or on which player will win some particular award.

Parlay Bets

A parlay bet is simply just a combination of smaller wagers into a much larger bet. There is a chance for a large payout with a parlay bet, but the risk also goes up as well.

Legal Online Casinos in New Mexico

New Mexico is a state that has a relatively large casino industry, but that doesn’t extend to online. All of the casino gambling must be done at the tribal casinos, commercial casinos, or race tracks.

The New Mexico Gaming Control Board oversees casino gambling, and there are some favorable rules and regulations in place for gamblers and for the casinos. A wide range of games can be offered, and poker is available as well.

It seems pretty clear that the tribal casinos in the state are looking to expand, and they would likely jump at the chance to offer online casino gambling. It’s unclear how that would work, but they wouldn’t pass that opportunity up.

Even though New Mexico is not one of the biggest casino industries in the US, it would still attract some companies that offer iGaming options.

Legal Online Poker in New Mexico

Poker is legal in New Mexico, and that will obviously help if the state looks to make online poker legal as well. This is not a casino game that is offered in every state, but it is in New Mexico.

Online poker sites can be offered separately from online casinos, but those sites will likely have some form of poker available as well. New Mexico could choose to launch online poker first or tie it in with any new online casino gambling law.

How to Set Up a New Mexico Online Gambling Account

If and when New Mexico online gambling accounts launch, you should be able to create a new account in a matter of minutes. Sites don’t want you to waste your time creating an account as they would prefer you start getting in on the action.

There are a few steps that you will need to take, but none of them require much work. Some personal information will have to be provided, but all of your information will remain safe and secure.

The first thing you will have to provide is your full name, address, date of birth, and social security number. The online gambling site will then work quickly to verify your identity before you are taken to the next step.

From there, you will be asked to create a username and password to use when logging in each time. Be sure to choose a unique username and a password that you have not shared with anyone else.

After you make your first deposit at the site, you are free to begin playing at the New Mexico online gambling site.

It is important to note that you should ALWAYS take advantage of the offer to create a two-step verification process so that your information is protected.

New Mexico Banking Methods

When New Mexico online gambling sites launch, you will be impressed with all of the available banking methods available to you. As the iGaming industry has grown, so too has the banking process offered at each site.

Sites and companies such as PayPal and Neteller have emerged as the top payment options at online gambling sites, and money can also be paid out through these as well. By linking your account at these sites to your online gambling account, money can be sent back and forth quickly.

An online bank transfer or an eCheck are two other acceptable forms of deposit at most sites. Some banking institutions put a block on these transactions, and you will want to check with yours before selecting this method.

Most of the deposit options listed will get money in your account in minutes, but you will happy to know that withdrawal options are also just as quick. Online gambling sites want you to receive your winnings quickly, although there are some that might have a delay.

All of the banking processes are safe and secure at online gambling sites, and you won’t have to worry about money being stolen or lost. By the time New Mexico launches online gambling, there could be new banking options that emerge.

The Future of Online Gambling in New Mexico

It seems strange that New Mexico has not yet legalized online gambling because there aren’t really any rules in place that restrict this from happening. Other states have had to work extremely hard to pass new constitutional amendments, but that isn’t the case in New Mexico.

New Mexico is a state that will have online gambling at some point, which could happen sooner than later. A bill was introduced in 2021, and it seems likely that bills continue to be introduced in the future.
