Analyzing the Latest NFL MVP Odds

Not much attracts greater interest and wagering involvement from football enthusiasts every year than the NFL MVP accolade. Kansas City QB, Patrick Mahomes, came into the 2023 NFL campaign as the odds-on favorite to take the award.

Still, at the conclusion of the 2023-24 season, Baltimore QB, Lamar Jackson, became the clear favorite in the wagering. With his -20000 MVP odds at major sportsbooks, he is almost a surefire winner and an easy option for NFL betting.

There’s much more to discuss regarding the NFL MVP odds, so read about it all in this blog post.

When is the NFL MVP announced?

On February 8th, during the 13th NFL Honors event, the NFL's Most Valuable Player is going to be announced. Catch the event live on NFL+, Paramount+, and CBS.

How is the NFL MVP Award decided?

Since 1957, the Associated Press has been voting on the MVP award. A group of 50 sportswriters would cast just one vote for their choice of the award. However, that changed in 2022, and now the sportswriters create a list of the top 5 players worthy of the MVP award for that season. Many people debate the idea of the MVP, as some say it’s the best player on any team. Others state that team success is important and which player is the cause of that.

Breaking Down Odds for the NFL MVP Finalists

Although Lamar Jackson is the favorite (more on him later), there are a few other contenders worth mentioning if you’re searching for where to bet on the NFL.

Dak Prescott – Dallas Cowboys

Although Prescott has produced impressive results in previous seasons, this run could be considered his best yet. In addition to setting career bests for both completion percentage (69.5%) and quarterback rating (105.9), Prescott also had the third-best passing yards (4,516) and the most passing touchdowns (36) in the entire NFL.

Brock Purdy – San Francisco 49ers

Purdy was on the fence for most of the season. But the one game that worsened his odds was against the Ravens, when he went scoreless and threw four interceptions. Purdy was decent, though, and in the top 5 for both passing yards (4,280) and touchdowns (31). But it's unlikely to sway voters.

Josh Allen – Buffalo Bills

Despite a few fluctuations throughout the entire season, Allen finished the year boasting ridiculous stat lines. He was the only athlete apart from Raheem Mostert to have 524 rushing yards and 15 TDs, not to mention passing for 4,306 yards (but let's not forget 18 interceptions).

Christian McCaffrey – San Francisco 49ers

This time around, McCaffrey was practically invincible. In addition to having the fourth-highest number of rushing TDs (14) and the greatest number of running yards (1,459) of any player, he also did a lot more on the field. McCaffrey ended with 67 receptions for 564 yards and seven TDs.

Tyreek Hill – Miami Dolphins

Hill was averaging 2,000 yards per reception until Miami's offense and Hill's production ultimately began to fade later in the regular season. This hadn't been exactly a monumental endeavor, but it was incredibly fruitful. Hill led all receivers with 1,799 yards, and finished in second place with 13 touchdown catches and also second in the league for 119 receptions.

Spotlight on Lamar Jackson

Many have already made their NFL MVP 2024 prediction long before the season ended thanks to this star. Pushing his Ravens to the highest seed in the AFC playoffs, Jackson's outstanding performance elevated a team that needed more offensive weapons and had lost numerous important players because of injury.

Jackson is no stranger to the MVP award, having already won his first in 2019 when he finished the season as a starter. It's almost impossible not to imagine Jackson picking up his second MVP trophy, as he's a quarterback in terrific form and everyone from fans to the media to the bookies is convinced that he's the No. 1 guy.

Jackson helped the Ravens get 13 victories, which was the highest in the league. He ended up throwing 3,678 yards for 24 touchdowns, as well as rushing 821 yards, but no one will forget his incredible game against Miami, where he completed 18/21 throws for 321 yards and five touchdowns.

Similarly, Jackson was fantastic in his 2019 season when he won the MVP, with great stats of 3,127 yards, 36 touchdowns and six interceptions from playing in 15 games.

Where to Bet On NFL MVP Odds

The Evolution of NFL MVP Winners

Many of the finest competitors in history have received the Most Valuable Player title in the NFL. Below you can find an overview of past MVP winners throughout the years, and it's clear that just one winner was not a quarterback. This implies that if you're betting on a quarterback, it's typically more secure.

Quarterbacks handle the football for the majority of the game and have the biggest impact on offense, so it’s not hard to see why QBs usually win the MVP award. Most praise goes to quarterbacks when the team wins, but also criticism when they lose as well! Many argue that the award should be simply titled Quarterback of the Year, but the NFL is unlikely to change this anytime soon.

Past MVP Winners

2022: Patrick Mahomes, QB (Kansas City Chiefs)

2021: Aaron Rodgers, QB (Green Bay Packers)

2020: Aaron Rodgers, QB (Green Bay Packers)

2019: Lamar Jackson, QB (Baltimore Ravens)

2018: Patrick Mahomes, QB (Kansas City Chiefs)

2017: Tom Brady, QB (New England Patriots)

2016: Matt Ryan, QB (Atlanta Falcons)

2015: Cam Newton, QB (Carolina Panthers)

2014: Aaron Rodgers, QB (Green Bay Packers)

2013: Peyton Manning, QB (Denver Broncos)

2012: Adrian Peterson, RB (Minnesota Vikings)

2011: Aaron Rodgers, QB (Green Bay Packers)

2010: Tom Brady, QB (New England Patriots)

Can a non-quarterback win the MVP award?

It is rare, but it can happen at times. Amazingly, just three NFL athletes have managed to earn the MVP without playing either the quarterback or running back position.

Linebacker Lawrence Taylor (New York Giants) won in 1986 with an outstanding effort from defense when he averaged 20.5 sacks for the season. Defensive tackle, Alan Page, won in 1971 and kicker, Mark Moseley, was successful in 1982. It's evident that only something truly special on defense can make you win the MVP in the NFL.

Betting Strategy: Maximizing Your Wagers

There are a few tips for getting the most out of your betting when it comes time to check the NFL MVP finalists.

Make the bet at the start of the season

Although anytime is fun to bet on who you think will win the award, the NFL MVP odds are best at the start of the season. Jackson’s odds, for instance, were at +1400, so it’s clear that many wish they’d bet on him at the beginning of the 2023-24 campaign.

Check websites that list all sportsbook odds

You might be loyal to one sportsbook provider, but sometimes their odds aren’t always the best. There are many websites that will list the MVP odds in the NFL for a player from multiple bookies. This means you can shop around and see where you can find the best deal.

Make a bet in the mid-season

While it’s true that some players can dip after the middle of the season, many others continue their great form. Keep an eye on any quarterback having amazing stats and more than likely he’ll be outstanding at the end of the season. You can read more tips about making money in our NFL MVP betting guide.

NFL MVP 2024 Predictions

It’s rare that an NFL MVP is so clearly decided (at least according to the bookmakers) so far ahead of the announcement, but Lamar Jackson is evidently everyone’s favorite. He ticks all the boxes for the MVP, including incredible player performance, helping his team win, and avoiding major injuries for the season.

The fact that Jackson has won the award before certainly won’t be held against him, as many stars have earned the MVP trophy multiple times throughout their careers. Peyton Manning, for example, has won the award five times during his illustrious time in the NFL.
