Michigan online sports betting is legal, but no sportsbook is yet operating online. Of course, it is still very early days. The Michigan sports betting industry only  became legal in March 2020, and there were only a few operators ready to open up at that time. Things were ultimately shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic just a few days later, but Michigan sports betting is back up and running.

In this article we’ll take a look at the Michigan online sports betting scene and its key players. We’ll also explain what to look for when choosing a sportsbook in the state.

Michigan Online Sports Betting: The Key Players

Some of the biggest names in the sports betting industry have targeted the state of Michigan, including FanDuel and DraftKings. Michigan online sports betting is set to go live in the state in early 2021 at the latest. When it does, the industry will thrive even more.

There are several great competitors in the Michigan industry, and this has created an extremely competitive environment. Sportsbook operators continue to look for new ways to stand out from the competition, and that's a win for sports bettors.

Here is a quick list of the competitors already in Michigan, but this list will continue to grow.

List of competitors:

  • Barstool Sportsbook
  • BetMGM
  • DraftKings Sportsbook
  • FanDuel
  • FOX Bet
  • PointsBet
  • William Hill

There will be other operators that launch in 2021. However, which companies will be able to obtain a sports betting license in the state is currently unclear.

Michigan Online Sports Betting: The Facts

  • The minimum legal age for Michigan online sports betting is 21.
  • The gambling industry in this state is regulated by the Michigan Gaming Control Board.
  • Mobile sports betting in Michigan is expected to become available in 2021.
  • It is not necessary to be a resident of Michigan to place a bet. However, it is essential that you are physically in the state when you do so. This applies to Michigan online sports betting as much as it does to betting at a retail sportsbook.
  • Michigan state law allows for betting on NCAA events.

Best Michigan Online Sports Betting Sites

Some mobile sports betting apps already offer retail sports betting in Michigan. Others are waiting until the mobile industry launches. The retail sportsbooks are already offering some bonuses and promotions to customers as a way of attracting new business.

A pair of the biggest operators are currently offering a bonus for customers to pre-register for a sports betting account. This offer is open now until the first bet is taken at each sportsbook.

DraftKings

DraftKings is giving away a $100 free bet to anyone that pre-registers for a sports betting account before launch. The money will already be sitting in your account when you log in for the very first time.

For what it's worth, DraftKings is also offering a $100 free bet at the online casino for customers that pre-register for an online casino account as well.

FanDuel

FanDuel is offering a similar promotion to DraftKings, but the amount of free bets has been slashed in half. Customers that pre-register for an account at FanDuel can receive $50 in free bets at the sportsbook and $50 in free bets at the online casino.

It is important to note that taking advantage of this pre-registration offer does not take away from the other bonuses and promotions that will be offered at launch.

Michigan Online Sports Betting Opportunities

Michigan state lawmakers wanted to give sportsbooks in the state plenty of leeway when it comes to what they can offer on their sites. The Michigan sports betting laws are extremely progressive, and sportsbooks can offer several different sports and leagues, as well as plenty of different betting options.

All of the most popular leagues and events in the United States are offered by sportsbooks in Michigan, but international events are also featured. The list of available betting markets continues to grow each month as do the sportsbooks themselves.

Betting on collegiate events is also allowed in Michigan, which means that you can bet on the beloved Michigan Wolverines or Michigan State Spartans. Some states limit betting on NCAA events, but that is not the case in Michigan.

Michigan sportsbooks are also able to offer live betting options, and prop betting is available as well. This means that you will always have a large number of betting options to choose from when you look to place a bet at your favorite sportsbook.

Michigan Online Sportsbooks

Since Michigan has yet to officially launch the online sports betting portion of the industry, there aren't currently any online sportsbooks up and running. This will change very soon, but some of the operators that have received a license have already been named.

This list will continue to grow in 2021 as tribal casinos are able to establish partnerships with sports betting operators. Michigan will have tremendous competition in the market, which is a great thing for sports bettors.

Here is a list of the online sportsbooks that are expected to be ready upon launch:

These are some of the biggest names in the sports betting industry, but there are several others still out there. This list will continue to be updated when new operators join the sports betting industry.

Choosing a Michigan Online Sportsbook

When the online sports betting industry officially launches in Michigan, sportsbooks will be working hard to attract new customers. This will also make the decision hard for sports bettors because there will be plenty of great options.

There are certain factors that every sports bettor needs to consider when choosing a sportsbook. You are free to sign up for as many different accounts as you wish, and that could give you a great chance to look at each site in more detail.

Here are some of the areas to look at when exploring each sports betting site.

New Player Bonuses

Bettors that sign up for an account at either FanDuel Sportsbook or DraftKings Sportsbook before the Michigan mobile industry launches are set to receive a huge bonus offer from the company. This bonus offer will expire once the industry launches, and so it is wise to take advantage of this offer now.

When the industry does launch, each operator will have a new player bonus available on their site. These bonuses will vary from site to site, but they will all include either a deposit match or a free bet of some sort.

FanDuel Sportsbook offers a $500 risk-free bet in other markets, and DraftKings Sportsbook has a welcome bonus worth up to $1,025. You will want to check out each site before deciding which offer is the best.

Promotions

Taking advantage of the new player bonus is a great way to get started, but promotions are also available as well. Again, each operator will feature different promotions, and there will be some specific criteria that will need to be met to take advantage of each offer.

Sportsbooks commonly offer 'odds boosts' as a way of highlighting some of the biggest sporting events taking place. This allows bettors to earn a bigger payout by placing a bet on the best matchups.

Risk-free bets are another common promotion that is offered in the industry, especially on in-play action. You will want to check out the promotions page or tab each day to ensure that you are not missing out on anything.

Betting Lines

The betting lines set at sportsbooks throughout Michigan will be extremely similar, but there will be some slight variations from time to time. As with the bonuses, it is best to shop around and find the best betting lines available.

Game Selection

The Michigan Gaming Control Board determines what betting markets can be offered by sportsbooks, and operators must follow those rules. Even though that list is standard, you will still find some variation across the board.

Some operators will focus more on international sporting events, while others will stick to the major sports in the United States. Betting on in-state collegiate sporting events is legal in Michigan, which is a huge bonus for bettors.

Customer Service

The customer service that is available might not seem like a huge reason for choosing a sportsbook, but it can make a big difference if you ever run into trouble. There are a number of different ways to get in touch with customer service, and each site will do things a little differently.

Live chat is the most popular way to reach customer service, and this will connect you to an actual representative. Some sites will also offer a phone number that will connect you to a customer service representative.

It would be a good idea to familiarize yourself with the customer service portion of the site before choosing a sportsbook.

Banking at Michigan Online Sportsbooks

Online sportsbooks want to make the banking process as quick and easy for customers as possible. There will be several banking options available, and the process can be completed on the mobile app when it becomes available.

All of the payment options are safe and secure as all of the sites are legal and regulated. You don’t have to worry about your money being 'lost' or your credit card information being stolen.

There are more deposit options than withdrawal options, but this is common in the online sports betting industry.

How to Deposit Money

Each operator will offer different deposit options, but there are some common options found in the online gaming industry. New options continue to emerge, and this list could grow at any time.

A credit/debit card is the most traditional deposit method, but new options have emerged in recent months. Here are a few of the deposit options that will be available when the online sportsbooks launch:

  • Credit/Debit Card
  • Online Bank Transfer
  • PayPal
  • Play+ Card
  • Cash at Casino Cage

How to Withdraw Money

Most of the sites will require a minimum amount before a withdrawal request can be processed. This allows the site to get the money to you quicker, and without having to charge you a fee for the privilege.

As with deposit options, this list could change at any time, and each operator will have different options available.

  • PayPal
  • Online Bank Transfer
  • Check By Mail
  • Cash at Casino Cage

The Benefits of Legal Online Sports Betting

There are several benefits to legal online sports betting. It is those benefits that motivated the state of Michigan to legalize the industry. Legalizing and regulating the sports betting industry not only brings in revenue for the state, but it also makes things safes for the sports bettor.

Offshore sportsbooks don't provide bettors with any real security, and Michigan lawmakers wanted to protect their residents. It was obvious that betting was already taking place, but now it can be done in a safe and secure manner.

The state of Michigan was facing a substantial budget deficit, and legalizing and launching sports betting was a great way to cut into this. Even though the initial numbers have been lower than projected in Michigan, things should start to take off at some point.

Another benefit of legalizing online sports betting is to make things easier for the sports bettor. You no longer have to travel to a retail sportsbook to place your sports bet - you can simply make all of your bets online.

Banking institutions have also recognized the online sports betting industry, and they now approve deposits and withdrawals to online sportsbooks. This didn't use to be the case, but now a bank will not block a transaction that is perfectly legal.

Michigan Legal Sports Betting Timeline

The state of New Jersey is largely responsible for the growth of the sports betting industry throughout the United States. New Jersey challenged the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), and that challenge went all the way up to the United States Supreme Court.

In March 2018, the US Supreme Court voted to lift the federal ban on sports betting, leaving the final decision up to each state in the country. This allowed Michigan to begin to explore drafting legislation to legalize and launch sports betting.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was in favor of legalizing sports betting and also legalizing online casino gaming. She announced that she would sign a bill if it made it to her desk, which happened right at the end of 2019.

The Lawful Sports Betting Act was the name of the bill that eventually was signed into law by Whitmer. It did not take the state long to get sports betting up and running as the industry was launched in early March.

Online sports betting and online casino gaming were also legalized at this time, but neither industry has launched as of Nov. 1, 2020.
